“Coolock Asylum Seeker Site Protest”

Around 60 individuals have convened outside a north Dublin location in Coolock, earmarked for accommodating asylum seekers. The demonstration is happening just outside the old Crown Paints factory located on the Malahide Road, with several protestors showing off tricolour flags.

The local protest group, Coolock Says No, utilised social media to announce that they had not coordinated any demonstration for the mentioned Saturday afternoon.

There is a visible presence of local officers at the location monitoring the situation, with the public disorder unit also keeping an eye on the proceedings.

The demonstration marks the most recent of a sequence of protests that have been happening in the area over the past few weeks, with a few ending in violent skirmishes with the police.

There have been over 20 arrests with charges related to public order offences tied to incidents near the Coolock location. Every one of these individuals have been granted bail under the condition that they maintain their distance from the old factory.

High Court heard this week that there are suspicions of unlit petrol bombs being delivered to the protest site via drones.

Representatives for the developer and leaseholder of the Malahide Road location confirmed that incendiary devices were found in vicinity of the property, believing these were dropped by drones for collection by certain individuals.

Previously, it was informed to the High Court that the site is expected to be developed into 500 modular units, mainly for the Ukraine refugees who fled the war in their nation and are lacking suitable shelter in Ireland.
