“Construction and Preservation of Water”

Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m writing to express my admiration for the ‘Building Change’ project mentioned in ‘Building better to address housing and climate crises’ (May 2nd, Science & Climate section). The project, supported by all six Irish architecture schools using the Higher Education Authority’s Human Capital grant, is a stellar initiative indeed.

I’d like to suggest that the project includes an element of assessing the water conservation techniques in newly constructed or renovated properties. Every single day, copious amounts of potable water are wasted on flushing toilets, whilst our water treatment facilities grapple with the increasing demand. Wouldn’t it be extraordinary to see newly developed and refurbished buildings focusing on water conservation methods, which could integrate the use of rainwater for toilet flushing or showers? This way, the treated water is saved for essentials such as drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. Besides, this implementation will also result in mitigated water extraction rates at the source or enhanced water treatment plant capabilities. This in turn allows the facilities to accommodate a larger populace and paves way for further construction projects.

I extend my heartfelt wishes to all those contributing towards this project.

Yours sincerely,

DERVAL DEVANEY,
Blackrock,
Co Dublin.
