Previously implicated in a homicide case involving a two-children’s father in County Cork, a man has now been indicted on two additional allegations, one of which is the owning of an elongated sword. Dylan Scannell, a resident of O’Rahilly Street, Cobh, was charged with the murder of Ian Baitson in the parking area of Eurospar, on Newtown Road Cobh on the 15th of March. Baitson, employed as a chef, was shifted to the Cork University Hospital due to an assault incident also on March 15th, and succumbed to his injuries four days later.
The suspect, Scannell, presented himself to the Mallow District Court on a recent Tuesday and received charges on two new offences associated with the murder case. He is alleged to have used a long-edged sword with the potential to inflict grave harm during a conflict at the Eurospar parking lot in Cobh on March 15th. In a further accusation, he is charged with handling, transfer or possession of money that he knew originated from illicit activities, at an undisclosed location between the previous August and March.
Det Garda David O’Shea testified regarding the arrest, charges and warning, mentioning that Scannell chose not to respond to either of the charges when informed. Inspector Tony O’Sullivan asked for a delay until August 13th for the presentation of the evidence book. The defendant’s legal representative, Cathal Lombard, confirmed Scannell was agreeable to the delay.
From Judge Marie Keane came the approval of the State request, keeping Scannell in ongoing custody at Cork Prison and ordering him to reappear at an additional session of the Mallow District Court to be held on August 13th.
