“Coastal Car Parks Closed for Ernesto”

In the wake of the forthcoming high tides on Wednesday night, the Galway County Council has declared the closure of several city parking areas. This decision has been prompted by the simultaneous impact of the residual Hurricane Ernesto and astronomic tides, both of which pose a threat of coastal flood and massive waves surmounting sea barriers. Car parks situated in vulnerable flood areas, particularly Silverstrand and Toft, have already been sealed off.

Public access to the Salthill parking area will be barred from 1pm Wednesday until further directives are issued. However, the Ballyloughane Beach Road will remain accessible to locals. Tides are anticipated to peak at 7:10pm on Wednesday, then again at 7:35am and 7:43pm on Thursday.

A yellow wind alert has been declared for Galway and Mayo counties, effective from 6:30pm Wednesday until 2:30am Thursday. Further, marine gale warnings have been issued from Erris Head to Malin Head, via Rossan Point, from midday Wednesday to Thursday. Coastal flooding, large waves, and localised floods are probable risk factors to watch out for amidst these situations.

A state-level high tide advisory commencing midday Wednesday and ending midday Friday has also been issued. The entire coast will experience robust winds, high waves, expected surges, and astronomical tides, courtesy of the ongoing “supermoon,” which exerts added gravitational pull on the earth.

Waterford City and County Council’s severe weather task force is on high alert, monitoring the developments closely. The council’s ground team stands ready to impose flood prevention measures if necessary. The local government urges the public to adhere to safety advices and refrain from visiting exposed piers, harbours, and sea walls.
