“Co Down Munition Clearance Lasts Days”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has announced that the removal of what is believed to be a historical explosive device, found in the Rivenwood vicinity of Newtownards, is expected to take a number of days. The explosive was discovered last Friday.

In an effort to ensure public safety, the area has been sealed off and inhabitants of the locality have been requested to vacate their homes for the period in which the police deactivate the unit. Furthermore, the public has been urged to steer clear of the Rivenwood region.

Superintendent Johnston McDowell expressed gratitude to the local community for their patience and cooperation during this endeavour. He acknowledged that these operations are causing significant disruption and reassured residents that their safety remains the topmost priority.

Visibility of policing within the area is enhanced as part of the procedure, engaging with those directly affected and working in collaboration with other agencies involved in the operation. Superintendent McDowell expressed his appreciation for the continued support from the local community and called for the general public to continue to stay away from the area, promising that further information will be given as the situation develops.
