Over 400 residences have been cleared out in Co Down due to a potential World War II bomb found in the Rivenwood area of Newtownards. The extraction of the historic weapon may take upwards of five days, it was discovered on a Friday. The Northern Ireland Police Service’s Superintendent, Johnston McDowell, thanked the living residents affected by this continual public safety operation in Rivenwood’s section of the neighbourhood. This operation affected more than 400 homes—a significant number—but the residents’ patience and comprehension have been commendable.
The Ards Blair Meayne Leisure Complex is serving as an emergency assist centre for the residents impacted. Supt McDowell further clarified, if homeowners or residents have not been directly approached by the police or haven’t received information about this matter, it’s less likely they will be impacted by the clearance operation at this time.
With a police cordon in place, and motorists are being urged to steer clear of the area, the operation is expected to last a few days more. While acknowledging the inconvenience this has caused, Supt McDowell emphasised that people’s safety is of utmost importance and no chances would be taken. He thanked those who may be affected for their understanding and assured that efforts are in place to minimise any more disturbance and keep the residents and local community safe.
