The Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is currently looking into a case of fish mortality in County Donegal where over 300 trout and eels have been found dead. The incident of pollution took place on a tributary of the Skeoge River in Bridgend which is officially recognised as a Special Area of Conservation. The fish casualties, which included brown trout and European eel, were noted along a one-kilometre stretch of the river.
Environmental officers from IFI began their inquiry into the event on Thursday, collecting a range of samples from the river for evidentiary purposes. Donegal County Council is simultaneously conducting their own probe into this ecological crisis. IFI mentioned their active engagement in determining the origins of this environmental mishap. However, they also noted that it is too soon to conclusively pinpoint how it transpired. There will be ongoing monitoring and valuation of the situation to ascertain the reasons behind the fish deaths and the state of the water quality in the river.
