Clonmel Remembers Leaving Cert Tragedy Anniversary

A large crowd convened on Clonmel’s Saturday night in remembrance of four young individuals who met their untimely death in a fatal accident that took place on the 25th of August the preceding year. The 18-year-olds – Zoey Coffey, Nicole Murphy, and Grace McSweeney – were along with Luke McSweeney (24), Grace’s brother, on their way to celebrate their Leaving Cert results when they met the fateful accident in Clonmel, County Tipperary that claimed all their lives.

In the aftermath of the dreadful incident, the newly constructed Kickham Plaza in the town became a gathering point for their numerous friends expressing their sorrow. The spot saw an influx of hundreds who came together to pay tribute to the victims during a moving ceremony marking the first anniversary of the incident.

The commemorative gathering featured reflections, prayers, and musical tributes.

Fr Michael Toomey, former curate in Clonmel and the organizer of the remembrance event, conveyed the family’s gratitude towards the residents of Ireland and Clonmel. He mentioned their heartfelt appreciation for the emergency services as well. According to him, the family wishes to keep the memory of Grace, Zoey, Nicole, and Luke alive. He reaffirmed that they will always be remembered.

The service concluded with the release of butterflies to symbolise hope and the inception of a fresh start.

The Mayor of Clonmel, Cllr Michael Murphy, praised the community spirit evident in the ceremony. He reassured that the townsfolk stood with the parents of Nicole, Zoe, Luke, and Grace, vowing never to forget. He found the concluding butterfly ceremony and the musical tribute special. As the Mayor, he expressed his pride in Clonmel and acknowledged that the families appreciated the event.

Sunday saw first-anniversary masses held for each of the victims in Clonmel and Kilsheelan.
