At the European Under-18 Athletics Championships in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, Cian Crampton secured Ireland’s first event field medal. The youthful Edenderry AC athlete made history for his country by setting an under-18 national record with a discus throw of 60.55m, which won him the bronze medal.
Crampton’s performance leading up to the final was superb, with his season’s best throw of 58.59m being recorded in the qualifiers. This is not his first notable achievement as he bagged a bronze medal last year at the European Youth Olympics. This recent accomplishment places him alongside Ireland’s legendary medalists at these games, notably Rhasidat Adeleke, Sophie O’Sullivan, and Sarah Healy, all set to compete in Paris.
Jakub Rodziak from Poland and Yaroslav Lystopad from Ukraine bagged gold and silver respectively in the discus event.
Meanwhile, Ben Sykes represented Orangegrove AC admirably, closing his tenure at the championship on a high note by placing seventh in the 100m final, with a time of 10.75.
Rhasidat Adeleke is set to participate in her final race before the Paris Olympics at the London Diamond League this Saturday. She’s entering the event fresh from her 400m victory at the Monaco Diamond League, where she recorded her second fastest time ever of 49.17 seconds.
