“Church Leader Denounces Irish Populist Paranoia”

In a recent address to the General Synod of the Church of Ireland in Armagh, Primate Archbishop John McDowell stated his belief that politicians who use populist rhetoric are exploiting fear and division in relation to migration, rather than contributing to mature political discourse. He emphasised his strong belief that Ireland still has room for more people, contradicting the slogan “Ireland is full.”

According to Archbishop McDowell, both left and right-wing populists are guilty of preying on public paranoia, saying that this approach is not only immoral but has the potential to infect wider society. He believes many can find it easier to perpetuate division rather than fostering a sense of community.

Addressing the Eurovision 2024 finals, he included a brief mention about Ireland’s Bambie Thug’s chances of winning and potential competitors.

Archbishop McDowell further highlighted the contributions made to Ireland by migrants and asylum seekers, saying that these newcomers helped to diversify the country to an extent it hadn’t experienced before. However, he felt that the integration of these immigrants and their needs into society could have been better considered, particularly in terms of its implications for social and physical infrastructure. Regardless, he asserted the responsibility to ensure justice for our fellow man. He opined that this time in world history, and specifically in Ireland and the UK, is highly significant, questioning whether it will lead to a breakdown or a breakthrough.
