Manchester City advanced seamlessly to the quarter-finals of Champions League by winning 3-1 against FC Copenhagen, marking their 10th consecutive victory and an aggregate score of 6-2. Entering the game with a two-goal advantage, City dominated early on, making first-half goals by Manuel Akanji, Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland. Akanji netted City’s first goal by volleying home Alvarez’s corner in the fifth minute. Alvarez then netted his own shortly after due to blundered goalkeeping by Kamil Grabara, allowing the City forward’s shot to slid past his hands. The Danish champions made a comeback with a goal in the 29th minute by ex-Southampton player Mohamed Elyounoussi, but Haaland restored City’s lead by shooting a hard, low ball through two defenders near the halftime.
In another game, Real Madrid advanced to the quarterfinals with an aggregate 2-1 victory, despite drawing 1-1 with RB Leipzig in their last-16 tie. Although Leipzig arguably dominated the match and created several excellent scoring opportunities, Real Madrid picked up their pace in the second half and managed to secure their spot in the next round. Vinicius Jr provided a lead with a counter attack in the 65th minute, only for Leipzig’s Willi Orban to equalise with a header three minutes later, leading to a thrilling finale which saw a shot by Dani Olmo hitting the crossbar.
Both Madrid and City will know who they’ll be facing next once the draw is released on 15th of March.
