Career Discussions at Higher Options: Focusing on the Hospitality and Tourism Sectors

Exploring Career Choices in Hospitality and Tourism: From Study to Profession

Industry professionals stress the value of practical experience and qualifications for individuals seeking careers in the hospitality and tourism sector. Despite the comparatively lesser demand for this field of study compared to others, professionals like Cáit Noone, the Head of Galway International Hotel School at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), highlight the impressive and globally accessible job prospects available in this sector.

There are varying methods of accessing higher education, some through the Central Applications Office (CAO) or alternative pathways for mature students as well as for those considering further education courses.

International hotel management degrees introduce students to an extensive range of career paths, states Dr Seán T Ruane from Shannon College of Hotel Management. Graduates often establish their careers in hospitality and tourism, with some progressing to entrepreneurship and starting their own ventures. Holding a business degree significantly facilitates this transition.

The emphasis on practical work experience is central to higher education in this industry, highlights Dr Ruane, pointing out that a degree can accelerate career progression within management roles. This industry maintains a strong focus on continuous learning.

The situation for hospitality graduates is looking positive as the industry begins to recover from the pandemic fallout, suggests David Maxwell, the Managing Director of Boojum. According to him, the sector recruits based on personal values while imparting necessary skills. Maxwell also promotes the benefits of building resilience, teamwork and empathy within this industry and encourages more people to explore opportunities without self-doubt.

Max Reid, an ATU alumnus of international tourism and management, speaks enthusiastically about his study choice, acknowledging the industry’s potential for diverse career paths and success. During his course, he gained invaluable experience during a business placement in New Zealand. His placement involved work in an Irish pub, providing him with profound insights into the functional aspect of a thriving business. He endorses the sector for anyone with a love for travel.
