Capital Punishment in America

Dear Editor,

Despite lingering doubts about his guilt, Marcellus Williams’ execution was sanctioned by the governor of Missouri. Our attention turns to Joe Biden’s commitment to abolish the death penalty. If his words mirror his intentions, he could demonstrate mercy towards the 40 individuals currently on federal death row. Conversely, their fate looks bleak if Donald Trump reclaims the presidency in the upcoming election.

During his last tenure, Mr Trump authorised the execution of 13 federal inmates, a pattern that could continue if he takes office again. According to many, the ‘Mandate for Leadership’ issued by Project 25 – considered by many as the roadmap for Trump’s second term – sets the stage for all efforts to bring these condemned men’s cases to a close.

Further inaction by President Biden would be indefensible.
