The fate of the British Conservative Party’s reign, as well as Labour’s potential resurgence after 14 years out of power, will become evident at 10pm tonight upon the release of a comprehensive exit poll. The poll, which assesses genuine voting patterns, will be made public by major UK TV channels as the polling stations close. This will provide an insight into whether the Labour chief, Keir Starmer, is set to enter Downing Street.
Earlier today, both Mr Starmer and the Tory Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, who has faced a tough election campaign marked by scandals, cast their votes in London and Yorkshire respectively. Voter turnout is reportedly high across the UK and Northern Ireland, and is expected to near the 66% mark achieved in 2019.
High-ranking Tory cabinet members, such as Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps, were reportedly striving to maintain their positions. Liz Truss, the former Prime Minister whose disastrous brief stint in the top job in late 2022 caused the Tory Party’s poll figures to take a nosedive, was reportedly also battling to hold onto her South West Norfolk seat.
In Scotland, Labour has been striving to recover lost ground from the Scottish National Party (SNP). A strong showing for Labour north of the Scottish border is regarded as integral to Mr Starmer securing an outright majority. Similarly, several constituencies in Northern Ireland’s general election were keenly contested.
