After showing impressive performance on the second day of the Curtis Cup at Sunningdale, Great Britain and Ireland are just three and a half points away from their first victory since 2016. They require these points from the eight single matches that will be played on Sunday.
The host team took advantage of home turf to secure four out of the six available points, therefore leading the United States 7-5, a team that has won the event thrice consecutively. Post the morning foursomes session, which saw both sides bagging a point and a half each, Hannah Darling and Mimi Rhodes put up a commendable performance against Jasmine Koo and Asterisk Talley in the afternoon four balls. They emerged victorious with a 3&2 win. This was followed by another impressive win by Lorna McClymont and Beth Coulter against Anna Davis and Melanie Green, their score standing at 2&1.
Unfortunately, according to Sky Sports, Sara Byrne, although presented with an opportunity to ensure a session clean sweep, failed to convert the birdie from 12 feet on the 18th. As a result, Rachel Kuehn and Megan Schofill, the competition for her and her partner, Lottie Woad, managed to scrape through with half a point.
In light of the imminent matches on Sunday, Woad who clinced the Augusta National Women’s Amateur earlier this year had this to say. She suggested to not glance too far into the future, and concentrate mainly on winning their individual match.
Despite some putts not dropping, according to a disappointed Byrne, she was highly appreciative of how she and Lottie played, especially Lottie’s fantastic putt on the 16th. Byrne also underlined the importance of the forthcoming matches.
