Today, an 11-year-old lad was brought before the courts, alleged to have taken part in the petrol-bombing of police during riots in southern Belfast. The violent outbreak, during which the youth supposedly participated, occurred around the Broadway roundabout on July 15th. Numerous law enforcement officers and their vehicles were targeted by mobs throwing handmade devices, fireworks, masonry, and other projectiles.
The young lad, who remains unidentified due to his underage status, was taken into custody after detectives analysed footage from the scene of the turmoil.
Having his parents by his side, the lad was presented to the Belfast Youth Court, facing a total of seven charges. These include incitement to riot, owning a petrol bomb under suspicious circumstances on three instances, and shooting a petrol bomb with an intent to damage or destroy a law enforcement vehicle.
Additional charges are causing an explosion putting lives in danger and carrying a dangerous weapon in public, in this case, bricks.
He affirmed during the brief hearing that he comprehended the charges put upon him. Denis Moloney, the defence lawyer, shared in court that the lad intends to plead not guilty to all charges.
Concerns were also voiced about the manner in which the young lad was interviewed by the police. The lawyer claimed, “he was questioned with a suitable adult present, but not his legal representative.”
The case is set to be overseen by an experienced prosecutor, taking into account the young lad’s age and other factors. Mr. Moloney, advocating for full accessibility to the CCTV recordings and all other evidence, appealed to the court. He reminded the court that the lad is appearing for the first time and was supposed to be at school instead. District Judge George Conner postponed further action until October 18th.
