The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, paid a tribute to the former prime minister, James Brokenshire. Mr Johnson mentioned Mr Brokenshire as the nicest, kindest, and most humble of politicians. The former prime minister died aged 53 after suffering from lung cancer. A statement of his family stated he died on Thursday evening.
Mr Brokenshire served as Northern Ireland secretary and security minister. A conservative MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018. Next, he experienced surgery to eliminate the upper lobe of his right lung.
Mr Johnson revealed his sadness after hearing the news. He tweeted, “He served with nice detail in the Home Office and as Security Minister. If the government needed something done great, fast, and sensibly defined, James was the man to do it.”
He said that Mr Brokenshire cared for the interests of his Bexley constituents were high. Mr Johnson added that former PM’s fight against cancer was heroic. He also will be missed by all who knew him. “Our thoughts are with Cathy and his family,” remarked Mr Johnson.
Mr Brokenshire was a non-smoker. He became vocal over calls for a national screening programme for lung cancer. In April 2018, he applied a debate in Parliament to call for a national programme to develop lower survival rates.
