“Bord Gáis Energy’s Offshore Wind Deal with Corio”

Bord Gáis Energy is set to make its entry into the offshore wind industry through a collaborative deal with Corio Generation, a leading offshore wind developer worldwide. The collaboration aims to investigate potential ways to distribute green electricity from offshore wind to Ireland’s power market. This move aligns with Bord Gáis’s objective to broaden its green energy offerings.

Corio boasts a global pipeline exceeding 30GW and is presently working on the establishment of Sceirde Rocks, a wind farm off Ireland’s west coast, with a capacity of 450MW. Bord Gáis Energy’s managing director, Dave Kirwan, remarked that the said partnership was a core aspect of their wider agenda to advocate for green energy. He stressed the company’s belief that all energy sources can be converted to green energy, enhancing Ireland’s energy security.

The partnership brings together the power generation and market access capabilities of Bord Gáis Energy, coupled with Corio’s vast offshore wind development knowledge and the financial support of Centrica. Kirwan added that the ongoing green energy initiatives were part of their broader strategy to push for a greener and fairer future in Ireland, spearheading the implementation of end-to-end green energy solutions needed to attain net-zero emissions.

Jonathan Cole, Corio Generation’s CEO, highlighted Ireland’s vast coastline and rich natural resources as key factors that make the nation ideally suited to extend its offshore wind potential. According to Cole, the joint efforts between Corio’s expansive development know-how and Bord Gais’ established leadership in Ireland’s energy market have enabled a partnership ready to make a significant contribution to Ireland’s energy transition.

Lastly, Bord Gáis Energy and Corio communicate their ongoing commitment to scrutinise potential opportunities in Ireland’s offshore wind field. They added that any particular activities would be taken up by Fuinneamh Óg Teoranta, a new registered Irish company.
