“Bernard Allen’s Funeral Honours Devoted Statesman”

Bernard Allen, an erstwhile politician of Fine Gael, dedicated his life to serving the Cork community but always prioritised his cherished family over politics when he was at home, according to sentiments shared at his funeral Mass. Prominent figures including Taoiseach Simon Harris, Tánaiste Micheál Martin, Olympic silver medal holder John Treacy, and Bishop Fintan Gavin from Cork and Ross congregated to pay their respects to the former deputy of Cork North-Central. He passed away last week at the age of 79 after a brief illness.

During the service at North Cathedral in Cork, his daughter Lorraine conveyed that though her father had a national political reputation, for her, her sisters Audrey and Deirdre, and their mother Marie, he was a cherished father and a dedicated husband. His adoration for his grandchildren was also notable. The family always left politics behind when at home, focusing on spending quality time together during holidays or at home in west Cork, and celebrating every possible occasion, she shared.

Bernard Allen’s political journey commenced in 1979 with local elections, following his uncle, Sammy Allen’s demise. He participated in the general election in 1981 and was re-elected in all subsequent elections until his retirement in 2011. Lorraine expressed her admiration for her father’s dedication to helping others, stating that he always took an interest in people and wanted to assist wherever possible. She cited his astute political acumen and his enthusiasm for engaging with political colleagues.

The main celebrant at the Mass, Bishop Noel O’Regan, characterised Mr Allen as a loyal, amiable, and approachable individual, fondly remembered for his vibrant personality and sense of humour.
