Jude Bellingham expressed that England exhibited tremendous fortitude in overturning their match against Slovakia with a 2-1 victory in the last 16 of Euro 2024. Initially, the game seemed to be sailing towards the biggest triumph for Slovakia as an independent nation, propelled by Ivan Schranz. However, a reversal of fortunes was favoured by Bellingham’s spectacular last-minute overhead kick and Harry Kane’s decisive extra-time header. According to Bellingham, the amplified emotions in those final moments were overwhelming; relief from the victory is synonymous with joy and offsets the massive pressure that accompanies representing England.
Bellingham felt they demonstrated valuable competitiveness and significant operational areas of the game, despite admitting the need to polish their finishing touch. He further underlined the significance of such heroic moments in knockout football matches which underpin and exhibit the team’s spirit. These moments wouldn’t be possible without the hardships encountered along the way.
In view of the tense moments, England skipper Harry Kane recognised the stiff challenge they faced. Yet, the team persisted and meticulously strategised, even planning for the unexpected like the long throws implemented during the match. Kane particularly praised Bellingham for his phenomenal goal, which kept their tournament dreams viable. Kane hailed Bellingham as a phenomenal contributor to the sport with a proven ability to deliver under pressure, necessary for substantial moments.
On a disappointing note, Slovakia’s coach, Francesco Calzona, highlighted that his team was almost on the brink of advancement. Despite the unfavorable outcome, Calzona praised his team’s performance, with their commendable effort prompting their opponents to resort to defensive play to maintain their win. He expressed immense pride and satisfaction with his team’s performance.
Reflecting on his goal scoring at the tournament, Ivan Schranz of Slovakia conveyed mixed feelings, saying, “It’s true, I’ve scored thrice but what good is it? Despite the potential magnificence, we fell short at the very end. Despite our disappointment, there’s no reason to harbour bitterness. Yes, we will find a way to handle this, yet there might always be a twinge of regret lingering throughout our lives. It’s not every day that we come across an opportunity to pen our own chapter in history…”
