With goals from Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas in the second half of the match, Barcelona triumphed over Olympique Lyonnais, earning a 2-0 victory in the Women’s Champions League final on Saturday. This marked the second consecutive win for Barcelona in this competition.

The Barca team, who last year secured a 3-2 victory over Vfl Wolfsburg in the finals, were looking to redeem their prior finals defeats against the French giant, Lyon, in 2019 and 2022, where they were bested 4-1 and 3-1, respectively.

Showing remarkable teamwork and individual expertise, they ultimately emerged victorious against Lyon, the historically successful team in the league, amidst a tense and keenly contested final match.

Supported by a significant contingent of their admirers at the San Mames stadium, Bilbao, Barcelona narrowly escaped an initial hiccup within the first 14 minutes, as Lucy Bronze had nearly deflected the ball into her own net. Fortunately, it hit the post and rebounded safely away.

Lyon’s Vanessa Gilles diligently kept her goal-line clear by effectively stopping a goal-bound shot by Mariona Caldentey, which had been initially saved, and Caroline Graham Hansen narrowly missed scoring before the first half ended goalless.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 63rd minute by Bonmati, the 2023 Ballon d’Or and Fifa Best Women’s Player awardee, with a close-ranged shot that ricocheted off Lyon’s Gilles past their goalkeeper, Christiane Endler.

In a bid to overturn the deficit, Lyon introduced Norweigan striker, Ada Hegerberg, to the pitch, but the leading scorer in the competition, hampered by recurring injuries throughout the season, failed to convert any of her chances.

The victory was ultimately sealed in injury-time by substitute, Putellas, who, despite nursing a knee injury, scored the decisive goal, ensuring Barcelona’s triumph.
