Gabriel Bannigan has been selected as Monaghan’s new senior football manager for the next three years. His team will include reputable figures like ex-Mayo player Andy Moran. Bannigan has served as a selector for Monaghan for the past couple of years and will be joined by John Elhone and Damien Freeman, a former captain, in his management set.
Vinny Corey, who replaced Seamus McEnaney in the role in September 2022, stepped down from his role as Monaghan’s manager in August, despite another season left on his contract. Corey’s tenure saw Bannigan actively contributing as a selector. Furthermore, Bannigan has a successful track record at his hometown club, Aughnamullen, guiding them to a junior championship victory in 2020 and leading their progress from junior to senior within three seasons. Bannigan also spent time managing Dublin clubs St Sylvester’s and Kilmacud Crokes.
Moran’s involvement in the team is considered a significant addition for Monaghan. Moran has devoted the previous three years to managing Leitrim and left the post in July. His association with Monaghan, especially after being associated with numerous counties recently, is a significant move.
Following a decade in Division One, Monaghan will compete in Division Two next season, marking the end of their prolonged tenure in the upper division.
