Local Argentinean media outlets disclosed the death of a woman in a landslide on Cerro López mountain, situated in Río Negro province, on Wednesday. Initially, she was reported to be Irish by La Nacion, an Argentinian media outlet, but this claim was later contested by official sources from Ireland.
Tragically, the woman was among three hikers trapped by the landslide during a cross-country skiing excursion. Rescue workers were able to retrieve the woman’s body from the disaster scene. The report issued noted that the fatal occurrence took place around 5pm on a hill part of Circuito Chico, 2075 metres above sea level.
The unfortunate situation led to the death of a woman with misplaced Irish origin, injured one man, and left another missing. The surviving man, who was initially treated at the scene and evacuated from the mountain, was also suffering from hypothermia, limiting the information he could provide about his accomplices.
The injured man was later admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries and hypothermia. In a turn of events, the third adventurer was still missing following the halt of searches late Wednesday night. Search and rescue teams had plans to continue their search efforts on Thursday morning.
