For a limited time, SuperValu has on offer two diverse wines sourced from the lower half of the globe. You might be acquainted with New Zealand’s sauvignon blanc, predominantly from Marlborough. Though this label doesn’t specify, my suspicion is that the grapes hail from either Marlborough or its neighbour, Waipara.
The majority of zinfandel we encounter is Californian. It features a broad spectrum of styles, ranging from light, sweet white zin rosé to luxe, full-bodied reds. Petite sirah, occasionally referred to as durif, doesn’t relate to syrah. It is an aged French grape variant that yields rich, dark-hued wines with notes of dark fruits and chocolate.
The first wine, Invivo Sauvignon Blanc 2023 from New Zealand, is an appealing dry white wine. It hits the palate with a fresh, snappy and subtly fragrant aroma, combined with clean tones of green apple and mango. With 12.5% ABV, it’s a steal for €10. Enjoy it as a standalone sip or paired with summer salads.
Nugan Estate’s La Brutta Zinfandel Petite Sirah 2019 from Australia is something far more robust. Priced the same at €10, and with an ABV of 14.5%, it is well worth the money. It is full-bodied and intense, boasting sweet dark plum and blackcurrant flavours patterned with a layer of dark chocolate. Savour this wine with hearty grilled or barbecued red meats to get the perfect aromatic experience.
