Gus Atkinson nearly broke records for England’s best performance by a first-time player, leading the team to an impressive opening day of the Test summer at the renowned Lord’s cricket ground. England made a strategic decision to field first, which was signaled by Jimmy Anderson in his last toss. They successfully bowled out the entire West Indies team for 121 before the tea break. Then it was England’s turn to bat, Zak Crawley (76) and Ollie Pope (57) each managed to notch up more than 50 runs, ending the day with England in a comfortable lead by 68 runs with eight wickets still in play.
Despite a slow start with the new ball, Atkinson, hailing from Surrey, seized the limelight from Anderson during his farewell Test by bowling Kraig Brathwaite out with a fantastic inside edge on his second throw. Atkinson went on to take another six wickets, showcasing his blend of speed and talent and breaking through the West Indies defence.
Anderson, however, found a way to leave a mark in his final Test by removing Jayden Seales, taking the last wicket of the innings. When it was England’s turn to bat, Seales fought back by taking two of England’s wickets, though England managed to regain control, placing themselves firmly in the driving seat as they prepare for the second day’s play.
