Citizens’ assemblies’ true value is evidenced by the topics that noticeably aren’t selected for their discussion. Despite many years of discussions surrounding immigration, not a single left-leaning politician or non-governmental organisation has suggested a citizens’ assembly for this matter. The explanation for this, quite simply, is due to significant differences within the left itself, where political entities are more and more removed from their voters. The divisions would be brought to light with an assembly and steering the conversation towards a preferred conclusion would be impossible.
Similarly, regarding neutrality, Tánaiste Micheál Martin, a well-known advocate of citizens’ assemblies, interestingly abstained from organising one. He was aware it would not bring about the result he was seeking. Instead, he recommended a “consultative forum”—a mobile academic group that would bring about the end of the triple lock, something an assembly would not likely have achieved.
