Antisocial Conduct on Public Transit

Dear Editor,

I’ve learnt that Eamonn Ryan, the Transport Minister, has dismissed the idea of creating a specialised police unit for transport. However, he has praised Dublin Bus for their decision to station security guards on their buses. To my satisfaction, the Fianna Fáil party still holds interest in the creation of a unique transport police unit as shown in the article “Dublin Bus rolls out pilot security scheme to combat antisocial behaviour”, published on October 7th.

A trial initiative that includes private security guards to address antisocial behaviour on Dublin buses has recently been initiated. Termed as “Safer Journeys”, the 20-week venture that just commenced, involves maintaining a noticeable and friendly security presence on bus services. This presence aims to curb the growing prevalence of unruly conduct on public transport. However, I’m advocating for an exclusive police unit to handle transport, rather than private guards, not just on Dublin’s public transport, but on all public transportation networks within Dublin and beyond as well.

I hold the stance that an exclusive transport police unit would heighten the visibility of Garda Síochána and facilitate a stronger connection with the commuter population.

Kind Regards,

John O’Brien,
Tipperary.
