It’s believed that a 40-year-old man from Ireland has been detained in Peru after local police discovered 55kg of cocaine in Lima, the country’s capital. The man was among three foreign nationals who were taken into custody following a reconnaissance operation conducted by Dirandro, Peru’s anti-narcotics division. Additionally, citizens of the UK and Bulgaria were also apprehended in this operation.
Policemen intercepted a leased vehicle and unearthed suitcases packed with the illicit drug. These individuals were under scrutiny since their separate arrival in Peru on July 21, and were captured on camera acknowledging each other at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport.
They are believed to have rented a flat in the eastern Lima district of La Molina, and also the vehicle that was later stopped. There are speculations that the Bulgarian man was closely monitored by the police due to suspicions of him colluding with Irish and British criminals to traffic cocaine from South America to Europe.
