An American tourist, confessing to having taken off with a piece of the Colosseum years ago, is returning the piece of Italian history.
The anonymous tourist sent the piece back in a package, stating: “We should have done it a long time ago, but we apologise and we give back what we took from the Colosseum 25 years ago, so that it can return to the place where it belongs.
”The package arrived at the Regional Tourism Promotional Office of Rome and Lazio, containing a piece of the world famous Roman monument that was taken years ago as a souvenir.
The woman said she felt guilty every time she looked at her collection of travel objects and memories, saying: “Over the years I thought if all the visitors to that beautiful monument took a piece, there would be nothing left.
Ours was a selfish and superficial act.
”The small piece of the Colosseum, small enough to fit into a pocket, will return to the archaeological office of Rome.
Kudos from the Italians goes to the woman’s sense of responsibility.
