Altering Periods

Dear Editor,

Recently, I found myself in a quaint confectionery store, much like the ones from my childhood, replete with delightful candies neatly showcased behind a glass barrier. As I was recalling my own dilemmas of maximising the meagre allowances of my youth, a little girl of about seven or eight years walked in. Poised on her tippy-toes, she extended a request over the counter, not for a bag of mixed sweets, but for a “£10 phone top-up.” The innocence of childhood lust for sweets was eclipsed in that instance, leaving a lamentable pang in my heart.

Yours sincerely,
David Curran,
Knocknacarra, Galway.
