During the initial day of the Omega European Masters at Crans-Sur-Sierre, Alex Fitzpatrick performed exceptionally, outdoing his two-time champion brother, Matt Fitzpatrick. With seven birdies and an impeccable opening 63, Alex landed a joint lead at seven under par with Alfredo Garcia-Heredia from Spain. Matt Wallace from England came third, sharing the spot with three others at six under.
Speaking about his performance, Alex mentioned that the early holes were quite challenging due to gusty winds. However, the wind subsided towards the end, which made it easier for him to seize the scoring opportunities.
Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2017 and 2018 champion, is aiming to emulate the legendary Seve Ballesteros by securing a third win. Despite the chilly and damp weather conditions, Matt delivered a respectable four-under-par 66. The ex-US Open winner admitted that the weather made the play quite difficult, but the softer greens enabled a more aggressive approach.
Matt Wallace entered the tournament as a favourite, building confidence despite an uninspiring first round in the British Masters. With subsequent rounds of 68 and an immaculate 64, he secured an 8th place finish at The Belfry.
Wallace appreciated his ability to stay in contention even without his top form expressing that if he maintains his current playing style and focus, he is on the right path.
Capping the day’s performance, Irish player Gary Hurley finished tied in the 38th position with a 68, ending the day with a -2.
