Watching the sheer determination of the athletes in this year’s Paralympic Games and seeing former F1 driver Alex Zanardi who lost both his legs in a horrific accident at Lausitzring in 2001, win a gold medal in hand cycling yesterday, shows the world that suffering a severe physical disability don’t always stop the passion for life, take for instance the amazing and inspiring story of Alan Kempster.
Kempster is a double-amputee, he lost both his right arm and leg in a terrible motorcycle accident when he was hit by a drunk driver in 1990, but he just couldn’t give up riding and decided he also needed to prove himself in racing because he wanted to open a motorcycle school for the disabled, so he fixed up a motorcycle with left hand controls and competed in a local race and won it.
While motorcycle racing isn’t an Olympic sport, we personally think that the IOC should give Kempster an honorary gold medal as he too is an inspiration to everyone.
