For the first time in their cricketing history, Afghanistan achieved a semi-final spot in the T20 World Cup after triumphing over Bangladesh, consequently leading to Australia’s elimination. Under the supervision of ex-England batsman Jonathan Trott, Afghanistan secured their position in the final four of an ICC event as a result of an eight-run victory against Bangladesh, achieved through the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in a rain-plagued Super 8 match.
This victory has lined up a semi-final fixture against South Africa and served as a shock exit for the 2021 victors, Australia. Amidst challenging weather conditions in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and frequent rain stoppages, Afghanistan managed to score a total of 115 for five in their 20 overs.
The backbone of the innings was provided by opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz who scored an impressive 43 off 55 balls, including three boundaries and a six. Captain Rashid Khan also contributed significantly with three late maximums in a brief 10-ball appearance.
The continuous rain resulted in a DLS method revision of the target for Bangladesh to 114 in 19 overs. Though Litton Das battled valiantly scoring an unbeaten 54 and poised to guide his team to the semi-finals, regular dismissals coupled with continuing rain intervals hindered their progress.
Afghanistan’s much-awaited victory was secured in the 18th over as Naveen-ul-Haq removed Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman in consecutive deliveries, resulting in Bangladesh being bowled out for 105. Taking four wickets each, Naveen and Khan aided Afghanistan’s progress. The team now awaits their semi-final battle against South Africa in Trinidad later in the week. In the other semi-final, reigning champions England will take on India.
