As Irish citizens cast their votes on the 8th of March in regard to the position of women both at home and within society, the country’s academic women will assemble at Trinity College. They will be discussing the evolving role of women in the study of the Irish language throughout various historical periods. This single-day event is intended to honour Women’s Scholarship as well as the Gender Issue within Irish Studies.
The conference, which takes place in the Long Room Hub, is coordinated by Dr Deirdre Nic Cárthaigh from the Roinn na Gaeilge. In a statement, Dr Nic Cárthaigh explained the reasoning behind organising such an event.
“We felt that it was an appropriate time to acknowledge the advancements made by women within academia, specifically within varying sectors of the study of the Irish language, from historical to modern periods,” she said.
She further remarked on how it was encouraging that numerous women were actively participating in numerous aspects of the Irish language and literature at tertiary level. Nevertheless, she acknowledged that there was still progress to be made to realise equality. She stressed the importance of acknowledging the research of these women, particularly their focus on the gender issue.
Speakers will include individuals such as Tríona Ní Sh peace, Máirín Ní Dhonnchadha, Ciara Ní Mhurchú, Sorcha de Brún and Síobhra Aiken. Each will bring unique topics from Caitlín Dubh’s work and legacy to the impact of women on the Irish Language Revival in America.
Reflecting on the continuously evolving perspective on the gender issue, Nic Cárthaigh stated, “We have a long way to go in fully understanding it”.
The variety of topics that will be covered during the day is a snapshot of the extensive research being conducted on the pertinent subject. Wrapping up the day’s events, an enchanting musical performance will be given by musician Síle Denvir to mark the conference’s culmination.
The subsequent event will be the initiation of ‘Máirtín Ó Cadhain 2020?’ compiled by Eoin Mac Cárthaigh and Pádraig de Paor. Ó Cadhain brilliantly illustrated a considerate and empathetic depiction of female characters in his work, and highlighted their torment amidst life’s trials. The participants are guaranteed to experience a captivating day.
