Prominent actor Martin Mull, renowned for his remarkable performances in top-rated comedy series such as Arrested Development, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Roseanne, has tragically passed away following a prolonged illness, as reported by his family. Mull’s remarkable career stretched across several decades, boasting an impressive array of roles in television, film, comedy, and music. His demise on Thursday, at the age of 80, was conveyed by his daughter.
His daughter Maggie Mull, a well-known TV producer and writer, confirmed her father’s passing on Saturday, expressing profound love and admiration for him. “My father departed on June 27th after bravely battling a long-standing illness,” she revealed on Instagram, where she was deeply saddened to break the news.
Besides his daughter, Martin Mull is survived by his wife, Wendy Haas. Mull was known for his remarkable sense of humour with his daughter maintaining that “He was perpetually humorous”.
Martin Mull’s versatile career included the portrayal of Colonel Mustard in the 1985 dark-comedy film ‘Clue’, based on the popular board game of the same name. His role as the protagonist’s boss and confidante, Leon Carp on ‘Roseanne’ was highly recognised. In the acclaimed Fox sitcom Arrested Development, he rendered the character of a private detective, Gene Parmesan, alongside veteran actors like Jessica Walter, Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, and Michael Cera. Extensive guest appearances on signature television shows, such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Two and a Half Men, are notable highlights of his extensive career.
In 2016, his brief appearance on the HBO political satire Veep bagged him an Emmy award nomination. The announcement of his passing spurred a wave of tributes, with Melissa Joan Hart, who personified the teenage witch Sabrina Spellman, taking the lead on social media. As a tribute to her onscreen high school principal, Willard Kraft, she expressed her heartfelt homage; “My dear friend, the exceptional #MartinMull (Principal Kraft) has embarked on his eternal journey,” she quoted.
The former child actress fondly recalls working alongside him and being completely impressed by his extensive portfolio. This included his roles in #Roseanne and #MrMom, before their time together on #SabrinaTheTeenageWitch. Even after their stint on the show, fate had a way of bringing the two actors together on various television sets over the years.
She shared his philosophy of accepting all job offers fearing the inevitable halt of opportunities in the unpredictable acting industry. The well-regarded actor’s departure elicited her empathy for his family, as they mourn the loss of an extraordinary individual.
