A fatal collision involving a quad bike and a tractor took place in Co Galway on Sunday, resulting in the death of a young man in his mid-twenties. The accident happened in the vicinity of Gort towards the southern part of the county, just past midday. The Garda are urging anyone who witnessed the event to come forward.
The incident, which occurred on the R353 in Derrybrien, involved the all-terrain vehicle colliding with a tractor and its attached trailer. According to the Gardaí, no other injuries were reported in relation to this tragedy.
Emergency services teams, including the Galway fire brigade, HSE ambulances, Gardaí, and a helicopter from the HSE Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS), promptly arrived at the accident site. The tractor’s operator, reports suggest, made an attempt to resuscitate the victim but failed.
Subsequently, the young man’s body was transferred to University Hospital Galway, with a postmortem examination slated to be conducted in the forthcoming days. The Garda are also anticipated to undertake a technical investigation into the accident.
On Sunday evening, due to the incident, the R353 road stretching from Gort to Portumna was off-limits for traffic and detours were enforced locally.
The Gardaí are appealing to those who were present in the neighbourhoods of Gort, Loughrea, and Derrybrien between 12:15 pm and 1:15 pm and possess any form of camera footage, including dashcam recordings, to share it with them as it could provide critical information.
