A visual journey: Two decades of Leo Varadkar’s political career

Leo Varadkar has relinquished his position as the leader of Fine Gael. In a heartfelt private announcement outside the Government Buildings, Varadkar shared that his stint in the Government was the most gratifying period of his life. Leo Varadkar was documented speaking in the pre-election conference by the Young Fine Gael back in 2007 by photographer Dara Mac Dónaill. Varadkar was also captured with the then leader of Fine Gael, Enda Kenny, working as the Minister for Enterprise in 2009. A snapshot from 2011, by Brenda Fitzsimons, shows Varadkar serving as Minister for Transport in his constituency in Blanchardstown.

In 2013, there was a call for a meeting with Varadkar, who was then the Minister for Transport, regarding the production of ID images for driving licenses by Kyran O’Kelly of Fuji Ireland, Tadhg Foley of Photo Me, Independent TD Michael Healy Rae and Olivier Gimpel of Photo Me, as photographed by David Sleator.

Varadkar was seen alongside Simon Harris, the then Minister for Health, marking the start of Phoenix Children’s Health’s construction during his tenure as Taoiseach. Varadkar was also photographed in 2018 with his predecessor, Enda Kenny, by Dara Mac Dónaill. Varadkar also shared a platform with Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin during the definitive TV leaders’ debate at the RTÉ studios in Donnybrook, Dublin. Additionally, he was documented at Blair House, Washington DC, declaring the onset of Covid-19 lockdown during a press conference in March 2020.

Varadkar was seen with former British Prime Minister Theresa May at a mutual press conference subsequent to their discussions at 10 Downing Street in London. A photograph also exists of him with the former US President Donald Trump at the House of Representatives in 2020, taken by Tom Brenner.
