Athletics Performance Summary:
Rhasidat Adeleke managed victory in her 400m race heat, secured 2nd place in the semi-final, and ranked 4th in the final. Sophie Becker ended her 400m heat at the 6th spot, progressed to 2nd place in the repechage. Andrew Coscoran secured the 15th place in his 1,500m heat and improved his standing to 12th in the repechage.
Cathal Doyle performed brilliantly in the 1,500m category by clinching 9th place in the heat, triumphing in the repechage, and reaching the 10th position in the semi-final. Mark English succeeded in ranking 2nd in his 800m heat and 6th in the semi-final.
On the other side, Brian Fay performed modestly by coming 13th in his 5,000m semi-final. Similarly, Eric Favors secured the 18th spot in his shot put heat while Sarah Healy achieved 7th place in her 1,500m heat and 4th place in the repechage.
Sarah Lavin and Sharlene Mawdsley both gave commendable performances. Sophie O’Sullivan displayed strength by coming 7th in her 1,500m heat and improved to 4th spot in the repechage.
In field games, Nicola Tuthill made to the 16th spot in her hammer heat. The spotlight was also on the relay teams, with the mixed 4x400m team coming 5th in their heat, and the women’s 4x400m team performing commendably to secure 3rd and 4th positions in the heat and final respectively.
Finally, Nhat Nguyen showcased his skills in badminton by winning 2 out of 3 matches; he ranked 2nd in his pool.
Rachel Darragh participated in 2 games, sadly she did not win any and was ranked third in her group. In the boxing competition, Dean Clancy (63.5Kg) and Aidan Walsh (71kg) were both eliminated in the 32nd round. Similarly, Jennifer Lehane (54kg), Jude Gallagher and Michaela Walsh (both 57kg), Daina Moorehouse (50kg) and Aoife O’Rourke (75kg) lost their matches in the sixteenth round. Kellie Harrington (60kg) managed to secure four victories availing her the gold medal, whereas Jack Marley (92kg) triumphed in the first round, but couldn’t go further than the quarter-final. Grainne Walsh (66kg) was also knocked out in the 32nd round.
In the canoeing competition, Madison Corcoran ranked 21st and 35th in the C1 and KX1 qualifying respectively, then finishing 4th in the heats. Michaela Corcoran secured the 24th spot in the Kayak 1 qualifying, while Noel Hendrick and Liam Jegou placed consecutively in all their races.
The road cycling competition saw Megan Armitage finishing at 35th place and Ben Healy at 10th place in road races, with Ryan Mullen taking 12th place in the time trial and 60th in the road race. In track cycling, Madison managed an overall 11th rank while the Omnium team secured the 10th overall position. The team pursuit team clinched 9th place in qualifying.
In the diving competition, Ciara McGing ranked 29th in the 10m platform qualifying, and Jake Passmore claimed 21st position in the 3m springboard qualifying.
In the world of horseback riding, Susie Berry finished 31st in eventing. Daniel Coyle took the 3rd place in the showjumping final qualifiers but had to drop out due to 16 faults. Sarah Ennis had to exit after completing two rounds of eventing whereas Abigail Lyle ranked 37th in the dressage event. Austin O’Connor and Cian O’Connor finished 17th and 33rd respectively overall in eventing while Shane Sweetnam managed to secure the 2nd place in the showjumping final qualifiers and ended at 22nd spot overall. The eventing team that included Berry, Aoife Clark, Ennis, and Austin O’Connor secured the 9th place overall, while the showjumping team comprising Coyle, Cian O’Connor, Sweetnam finished at 7th spot overall.
In golf, Shane Lowry shared the 26th position on five-under-par. Leona Maguire trailed at 59th position having a miserable performance of 23-over-par. Rory McIlroy secured a decent spot and shared the 5th place on 15-under-par and Stephanie Meadow ended at 39th spot with six-over-par.
In gymnastics, Rhys McClenaghan claimed 1st position in the pommel horse final qualifiers and managed to score 15.533 and bagged the gold medal.
For the hockey games, the outcomes were: Ireland 0 Belgium 2; Ireland 1 Australia 2; Ireland 0 India 2; Ireland 1 Argentina 2; Ireland 2 New Zealand 1 and the Irish team managed to secure the 5th place in Group B.
In rowing, Alison Bergin and Zoe Hyde worked their way to the third spot in the double scull heat and slipped to 5th place in semi-finals and 10th position overall. Aoife Casey and Margaret Cremen also saw a bit of fluctuation in rankings as they took 3rd place in lightweight double scull heat but sprang to the top in repechage, and secured 3rd in semi-finals and finally 5th place overall. Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney similarly took 3rd place in coxless pairs heat and held onto their position in semi-finals but slid down to 6th place overall.
Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch took top positions in both their double scull heat and semi-final, subsequently winning a bronze medal.
In the coxless four category, Emily Hegarty, Eimear Lambe, Natalie Long, and Imogen Magner came in 3rd in their heat, ended up 4th in the repechage, and ranked 7th overall.
Aifric Keogh and Fiona Murtagh stood 2nd in their coxless pairs heat, fell to 6th position in semi-final, and finished 8th overall.
Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan triumphed in lightweight double scull heat and semi-final, bringing home a gold medal.
For Rugby Sevens, the men’s team from Ireland ended with a commendable 6th place win overall. They achieved victory against South Africa (10-5), Japan (40-5), and USA (17-14) but fell short against New Zealand (12-14), Fiji (15-19), and New Zealand (7-17).
The women’s team, coming in at 8th overall, faced defeat against Britain (12-21), Australia (14-19), Australia (7-40), France (7-19), and Britain (12-28), but celebrated success over South Africa (38-0).
In the realm of Sailing, Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove secured a 4th place finish on 91 points in the Skiff race, whereas Finn Lynch came in at 10th position in the Laser Radial with 115 points. Eve McMahon achieved a respectable 13th place in the Laser Radial, amassing 108 points.
Lastly, in the Swimming competition, Tom Fannon finished 6th in the 50m freestyle qualifying and recorded the 10th fastest semi-final time.
In the 50m freestyle qualifying, Danielle Hill came in at 21st position, and she ranked 16th in the 100m freestyle, having the 16th fastest semi-final time.
Mona McSharry achieved third place in the 100m breaststroke qualifying, had the 2nd quickest semi-final time, and managed to win the bronze medal in the final. In the 200m breaststroke qualifier, she was 7th and had the 16th fastest time in the semi-final.
Ellen Walshe managed to reach the 8th spot in the 400IM final, was 13th in the 200IM semi-final, and in the 100m butterfly qualifying, she ranked 22nd.
In the swimming events, Daniel Wiffen stole the show with his exemplary performance. He came first in both the 800m and 1,500m semi-finals, winning the gold medal in the 800m final and a bronze in the 1500m final. His performance in the 10km open water swim secured him in the 18th position.
In team events, the Women’s 400m Freestyle Relay (Victoria Catterson, Grace Davison, Hill, and Erin Riordan), achieved 16th place in the qualifying rounds. The women’s 400m Medley Relay team (Davison, Hill, Walshe, and McSharry) got 11th place in the qualifiers. Similarly, Men’s 400m Medley Relay team (consisting of Conor Ferguson, Darragh Greene, Max McCusker, and Shane Ryan) qualified 11th.
On the other hand, Jack Woolley, a Taekwondo player, unfortunately, lost both his bouts and ended 7th overall.
