Sir, – Jack Horgan-Jones’s piece regarding global digital vulnerability, more specifically, possible cyber assaults performing as a threat prompts once again concerns about the delicate state of our global digital networks (“Increasing risk of significant cyber-attacks on Ireland within the next two years, warn security centre”, News, August 6th). Remarks made by the Assistant Garda Commissioner Michael McElgunn and a report from The National Cyber Security Centre on the security hazards threatening the state should alert both the private and public sectors.
In today’s hyper-connected digital society, cybersecurity is of utmost importance to everyone. The old saying “the strength of a chain is measured by its weakest link” could not be more relevant.
The exposure of Ireland’s and Europe’s digital networks to potential threats from Russia is alarming. At the Kremlin’s command, attacks that could result in instantaneous devastation and societal distress could be launched.
Given the magnitude of these risks, it is essential that they receive attention from the top echelons of the political world. To coordinate EU-wide and national initiatives to secure our digital future, Ursula von der Leyen should consider appointing a commissioner responsible for digital and data infrastructures. This act would aid in protecting Europe from cyber-attacks threatening to ruin our democracies. – Yours sincerely,
