“Dear Editor,
It’s high time we put an end to the annually reiterated misconception that the St Patrick’s Day parade garners an attendance of half a million people (as reported on 22nd February). A quick calculation reveals that considering two individuals per metre, lining both sides of the official 2.5-kilometre marching route, the throng would need to be 50 spectators deep throughout.
In my opinion, the legend of St Patrick driving all snakes away from Ireland feels far more plausible than these crowd numbers.
Kind Regards,
BARRY KELLY
