A fatal accident involving a 30-year-old man on the perilous A5 road in County Tyrone occurred on Tuesday. The man, named Caolan Devlin and hailing from Coalisland, gave his last breath after the BMW he was driving collided with a truck on the Curr Road segment of the A5, in between Omagh and Ballygawley on Tuesday evening.
The A5 road, notorious for its high number of fatal accidents, is under intense scrutiny for an upgrade. The highway connects Dublin, Donegal, and Northern Ireland. The Government has pledged a €600 million fund for its upgrade last month; nevertheless, the renovation efforts have been being pumped for the past 16 years, with no actual work on the project due to continual postponements and legal hitches.
Northern Ireland’s First Minister, Michelle O’Neill did not hold back in expressing her condolences towards Mr. Devlin, who is the sibling of Tyrone’s senior football player, Niall Devlin. She stated that the incident was a tragedy and how the local community was wrecked by it. She acknowledged the work of the emergency services and prompted individuals to cooperate with police’s request for dash cam footage.
O’Neill underscored the urgency of the A5’s upgrade, terming it as an essential measure to prevent future fatalities. In her appeal, she urged the project’s opposers to reconsider and withdraw their objections, emphasizing the immediate necessity for its construction.
Caolan, a young man cherished and esteemed by many, especially within the local GAA community, has tragically passed. His grim demise in a road accident on A5 is going to deeply affect those who knew him, marking his promising future abruptly cut short.
In a sorrowful statement, Northern Ireland’s infrastructure minister, John O’Dowd expressed his profound sympathy for Caolan’s bereaved family and friends. The minister didn’t forget the driver of the other vehicle involved in the calamity as he acknowledged the severe and significant impact this unfortunate incident will have on him.
O’Dowd raised his concerns about the many lives being ominously altered or abruptly ended due to serious accidents on A5 and the resulting unbearable agony for the families. He expressed regrets about the relentless heartache as he interacted with the grieving families and reassured them about his unabated commitment towards the necessary improvements of A5.
Following the recent discussions in the Assembly chamber about the vital role of A5 in ensuring road safety and the potential for its improvements to save lives, it was disheartening for the minister to acknowledge the loss of another life on the same road within a few hours. A family is deeply in mourning, suffering the loss of a loved one.
O’Dowd underlined his resolve to drive the project progress on A5 forward without further delay in the hopes of preventing more tragedies. He earnestly asked for any opponents of the road’s development to reconsider their stance and drop their opposition.
