Following a solo motorbike accident near Castlebar in County Mayo on Wednesday evening, a man of just 18 years lost his life. The Gardaí and other emergency services reported to the incident just before 5pm at Cloonkeen on the R309, and confirmed the motorcyclist died at the location.
The road where the accident took place is presently shut and local detours have been established. There has been a call for collision forensic experts to assess the scene. The local Coroner has been alerted and a post-mortem examination is to be scheduled. Following this incident, the number of fatalities on Irish roads for the current year has risen to forty-one. This represents an increase of one from the corresponding period last year.
The Gardaí are urging any witnesses to the incident to step forward. Additionally, those who were in the area at the time with camera footage, such as footage from dash-cams, are being asked to share this with the investigating Gardaí.
